HAPPY MERDEKA to all MALAYSIANS!!

Today marks the last day of this NEW HOPE FOR ORANG-UTAN SCHOOL PROGRAMME.

Wanna know what we have been doing in the past three weeks? Well, keep reading (:

We started on the 5th of August with a signature campaign, which was a kick off for our project.

Our main idea of the campaign is to let the community know that we are here, to help orangutans. Not forgetting, to create awareness.

Feedback? : Up to now, we have a total of 305 signatures!

On the following week,

Our team attended a talk on Deforestation( refer to old post) ,which was at Annexe Gallery, Central Market. It was overwhelming to our team members as the organizers and the people there are very enthusiastic. They were debating (arguing, in a polite manner) on matters such as, well.. deforestation. Not only that, the speaker and the people there stood up and voiced out their opinion on issues that are mostly insignificant to us, humans. This definitely inspired us to be more concern on how our daily doings affects nature in every perspective. In a nutshell, we were determined to help save MotherNature -bit by bit. (Hands up if you want to help too! )

Being the immature to orangutans ourselves,

We've decided to invite a NGO in Malaysia to give a talk in our very own school. The NGO is non other than W-O-X Sdn Bhd. Their talk was brilliant! Our friends and teachers were very impressed with the aspiring talk. So kudos to W-O-X (you know who you are (; )

Despite organising all the activities above, we also came up with a badge design. Yep, it cost only RM 5.00 each (button badge). Plus, we also help to sell T-shirts for W-O-X.

Our finale for this project, we decided to experience the real deal of working with animals (primates). So, we went for a volunteering service at our very own Zoo Negara. (refer to previous post)

In a nutshell,

Having to organize all the events above was a very new and tedious work. However, I personally think that this Programme was a very educational eye-opener for us peers. Without this programme, I never see myself and my team members doing something to help save those who need us. So kudos ,and lots of kudos to WWF, BOH plantations and TV9 for coming up with this programme!

Datanglah ke Zoo Negara! :D

Dear reader,

How is your school holidays going on? Here's a suggestion on how you can spend an interesting holiday.. Be a VOLUNTEER!

On 26th August 09, my team members plus a friend volunteered at our very own Zoo Negara.
The original plan was to organized a trip, for volunteering but my team decided to go check it out first :D
We left Subang Jaya at 630am to drive to Kelana Jaya LRT station, as we have to reach Zoo Negara by 8am. Since it was still dark ,and the sun has not rise.. most of us were still dead sleepy :P

HOW TO GET THERE? We took a ride in the LRT, which cost RM2.50 each, from Kelana J to Wangsa Maju.
Surprisingly, we reached at Wangsa Maju station at 735am SHARP. So kudos to our time management system *self praise*. Anyways, from Wangsa Maju station we had to take a cab to Zoo Negara. It cost us RM10 (so RM2 each). But of course, there are other alternatives. You can take the bus, (rapid KL U-34)which goes straight to the Zoo) but it was 730am and I guess not many people go to the Zoo so early, so the bus driver didn't wanna go.

FUN is just the right word to describe the day. We were told that the five of us were gonna do different stuff, but it all involves helping the keeper. Afie and John were with a same keeper- dealing with monkeys. Diyana and I were helping our keeper- with monkeys and gibbons. And Andrew was with the hippopotamus! :P

I'm not too sure on what the rest did (wait for their post,coming up soon) but here's what Diyana and I did :D
First, we had to clean the cages. YES, POOH! haha. The smell was ...well you know. Fortunately our keeper was kind ,he just made us help him pull the water pipe. But we got to go into the cages to be with the gibbons (very scarily fun), and FEEDING time was super duper awesome =D

The highlight of my day, was after cleaning the pooh and cage. One of the monkey climb on me and wanted to play. So I ended up carrying it around, in its cage :D

10am-1025am was break time. After that, the five of us were back together to help WOX with enrichment! We helped out with the primates. Apparently most of the primates here are "bored". So to keep them busy and to show more about their natural behaviour, This is what enrichment is for! We had to come out with ideas on how to get them busy. For example, we stuffed kuaci in apples and pears and let the primates think on how to get the kuaci out. (They ended up squashing the apple) :D

Reached home at 645pm. It was a long, tiring day. Yet it was such an experience :)

Let me hear you talk.

Have you ever wondered what are the differences between a male orangutan and a female orangutan ? Well, take a look at this pictures.

Notice the difference yet? Well, the left one is a male, and the right one is a female. The male generally have a larger cheek.

Interesting ,huh? * I didn't know that either *

Oops, you caught me there. I have to admit that I do not know MUCH about orangutans, and immature in this topic I would say. But I would gaurantee you that my team members and I are learning about this unique species, bit by bit ! So to amaze our peers and to educate us more on orangutans & what are our individual role in conservation efforts, my team decided to call in the experts in this field.

My team coorperated with LEO Club of SMKSJ to invite people who are more familiar, or shall i say the experts of orangutans? We invited speakers from Wild Out Experiences, or better known as W-O-X Sdn Bhd , one of the inspiring NGOs in Malaysia, doing their part in helping species that are in the brink of extinction (orang utans).

The One After The First

A talk on deforestation - one of the cause of orangutans EXTINCTION.

Date : 9th August 2009

Venue : Annexe Gallery, Central Market ( yep, we went all the way there! *smiles*)

Event : Talk on Deforestation by Albert Goetzl.

Time : 3pm - 5pm

Yesterday, the three of us, Diyana, Cherlyn and Afie attended a talk on deforestation and climate change by Alberto Goetzl. We went all the way from Subang Jaya to Central Market by train. It was a fun journey though. Only that one of us *ehem ehem* (names are not to be stated) didnt actually know how to get there by train from Kelana Jaya. All the while he/she kept asking questions like, "are we stopping at kl sentral or what?" and "do we need to switch train?" I, on the other hand, had a good time laughing at him/her.

Anyway, the purpose of us, attending this talk is to know more about deforestation, illegal logging and climate change, which is also the cause of orangutan's extinction. They lose their habitat. Just imagine if we, humans, have no house, shelter or food. We cant live, can we? The same thing is happening to them now. But have you ever wonder, WHY does this happen? Are HUMAN the ones to be blame? Bak kata Nabil, "lu pikirlah sendiri" (:

I think, it is very important for each of us to know and find out, how exactly the orangutans extinct so quickly and drastically. From the statistics, I found out that almost 20% of orangutans lost their habitat because of THIS, deforestation.

So wht if we try something new? Would creating a community, a movement of people, a louder voice to save the orangutan and attack on its causes of extinction, is a good plan ?

Another First !

First Official Activity..

Yeah! We finally did something. Asked for a table right at the entrance. Had signature campaign! And ... hohoho.. we got 191 signatures! Woot! Hehe.
